How VR Escape Rooms Work

Learn how to set up a VR escape Room

Running a VR escape room lets you offer your customers an impressive new experience they can't get anywhere else — all while removing the difficulty of launching new physical rooms, doing costly repairs, and running out of products for your customers to enjoy.

But what does it take to run a VR escape room? And how does it all work?

That's what this page is all about. We'll get you up to speed with what VR is, how our escape room implementation works, and how you can get started.

1: How Does VR Work?

There are many headsets now available on the market. We support the HTC Vive and Vive Pro, Valve Index, and Oculus Quest.
  • Two video feeds are fed into the headset
  • Lenses distort the image for each eye creating the immersive feeling of seeing things in 3D
  • Head and hand motion are tracked allowing the image to stay in synchronization and the user to reach out in the virtual space
But at home, VR is generally limited by the amount of space the player has to dedicate to the experience — and developers releasing VR games for the home market design their products around this limited space.

2: How Room-Scale Free-Roam VR Works

Now, here's how location-based entertainment venues can offer something special.

By using a wireless option like the Oculus Quest, or powering high-end headsets with portable backpack PCs, you can turn an empty room into any number of incredible VR environments — that your customers can explore together.

Having the ability to freely roam around the room with friends as if they were actually there is something your customers just can't get at home.

3: How the vr escape rooms work

Players in VR escape rooms solve puzzles just as they would in a traditional escape room.

They will find themselves in a fantastical environment — a space station, or under the sea — and start exploring. There may be objects to pick up and manipulate. There may be codes to decipher. Doors to unlock. When they solve one set of puzzles, they can be seamlessly transported into the next area — allowing the experience to stay fresh throughout their booking.

Success or failure, these customers can return to experience different rooms in the same space — as thanks to the vrCAVE library, escape rooms are able to drastically increase the number of rooms they have available.

4: Getting Started with vrCAVE

First, we'll want to get you set up with a demo.

If you already have some VR hardware, you can experience the demo directly. Otherwise, we can make other arrangements.

We will discuss options for hardware and software, but all you need to have is an empty room with dimensions as shown in the diagram.

You'll then proceed with installation. You'll decide where your charging station will be, whether you'll support a spectator area, and so on.

5: Marketing Your VR Escape Room

Finally, you'll need to actually get those excited VR explorers into your business! On that end, vrCAVE supplies some ready-to-go marketing material to help you show off the rooms. You'll be able to hit the ground running with promotion and have answers to any questions your customers may have.

You'll be able to suit them up and get them into their timed session quickly and efficiently — ready for the next group!

Special COVID-19 Note

While owners should sanitize equipment between users at all times, during the COVID-19 pandemic, business owners can be confident that the VR equipment can be safely sanitized for the safety of guests. Guests should only be touching the equipment they are personally using which will help limit the risk of transmission through surfaces.
